She came into my office
With a gang of kids in tow.
Why people had so many kids
Was more than I could know.

She explained she had twelve kids
Because she couldn’t hear.
So I said I’d see her right away
Because I thought that queer.

She certainly had a hearing problem,
She was deaf as she could be.
But how it caused twelve kids
Was more than I could see.

I said that I would gladly fit
Her hearing aids for free,
If she’d tell how her hearing loss
Caused her large family.

She said when first she married,
And lived in just a hut,
Jake would always ask,
“Do you want to watch TV, or what?”

Well, that had been the reason
How they got in such a rut.
Because she couldn’t hear him,
She had always answered, “What?”
