While Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson
Were camping out one summer night,
Sherlock awakened old Doc Watson
To a most unusual sight.
“Look at the stars”, he said to Watson,
“Can you tell me your deduction?”
‘Cause Sherlock liked to ask a question
To be used as an instruction.
Dr. Watson said he saw the stars
Each as an individual light,
That had taken many light years
For it to reach us here tonight.
Sherlock replied, “Watson, I asked you
What you deduct, not what you see.
Now carefully think it through again,
Don’t leave the thinking all to me.”
Dr. Watson got real unhappy,
Just what did stupid Sherlock want?
Soon, “Elementary my dear Watson,”
Would be Sherlock’s usual taunt.
So he named each shining star, then gave
Each constellation’s history;
And then he asked Sherlock to tell him,
“Just what is all the mystery?â€
Sherlock said, “Watson, you’re so stupid,
It’s elementary what I meant.
Just look up! If you can see the stars,
Then maybe someone stole our tent.”
