As I was walking through the woods
At a careless rambling pace.
I ran into a spider web
And it stuck on to my face.
I stood with goo stuck tight to me
All thoughts of happy hiking gone.
So much depended on one fact
Which side of the web was the spider on?
There frozen in mid step with fear.
That one thought caused my heart to race.
Was the spider crawling on the ground
Or was he plastered to my face?
In the summer, our woods are filled with large quarter sized spiders on webs that are like guy wires. These particular spiders take them down in the daytime by re-digesting the web material, but they are back up again by dusk. An open-top Jeep ride through the woods can lead to some pretty interesting movements by unsuspecting visitors. We always tell them that we only travel in the direction that keeps the spiders on the other side of the web from us. For some reason this doesn’t seem to give them much comfort. Ruth came home from a walk with the idea for Spider Web. She wrote her ideas down and I converted them to my rhyme and rhythm. A final thought, When walking down a path with spiderwebs stretched across it, always walk behind someone taller than you.
