Obey

Adam and Eve lived in Paradise,
There was nothing that they couldn t do.
No parents to nag or rooms to keep clean
And of course they had no curfew.

They spent all their time naming critters,
When they weren t too busy at play.
With nothing forbidden for them to do
A word never learned was “obey.”

But God in his wisdom saw this wasn’t good
So he planted a tree by the lake.
“Don’t eat of the tree,” He told the two youths
“And Eve, stay away from the snake!”

Adam said, “Obey? Yeah Dad, that’s so cool.”
But Eve being a woman said, “Why?”
God replied, “Just because I said so
And you must obey or you’ll die.”

So Adam went off to name some things
And Eve went to find the snake.
“A forbidden friend, now that’s too cool.”
She found him in the tree by the lake.

Births to be painful and heels to be bruised
Were to be our God’s awful curse.
But one thing He added, not written in text,
That certainly turned out to be worse.

It was passed down to us through the ages
And it’s certainly more true today.
Any kids with which we’d be blessed
Would have trouble understanding obey.
