New Friend

The worm was having a great day,
Tunneling happily through the muck.
When he came upon such beauty,
Love hit him like a two ton truck.

Her skin was so brown and shiny,
Her curves were such a lovely sight.
He’d always been a timid worm
But what the heck, she couldn’t bite.

So he moved a little closer
But she just quickly backed away.
He tried fancy earthworm wiggles
To try to make her want to stay.

And when she wiggled back at him
He knew that he had caught her eye.
But she let him get no closer
No matter how hard he would try.

He knew he had to hurry up
Or she would surely get away.
Determined to meet this beauty
If he had to spend the whole day.

He stretched as far as he could stretch
Gave the beauty a timid shove.
But when he touched the lovely thing
He knew that he had not found love.

For he hadn’t met his dream girl,
Nor had he even made a friend.
The lovely girl he’d been chasing
Turned out to be his other end.

Have you ever had one of those days when you felt like you were chasing yourself around in circles? The little fellow in New Friend did just that. His problem was that he caught up with himself and was very disappointed. Maybe that is where the old saying, ‘The worm turned,’ comes from or maybe that was just a family saying.

If the story has a moral, I guess it would be that one could waste a lot of time pursuing his or her goals if those goals are not grounded in reality.
