Late to Work

Harry had worked there twenty years;
He always punched in right at eight.
You could set your watch by Harry
But this morning Harry was late.

All of us had taken notice
When eight o’clock had come and past.
We began to check our watches
Each thinking that his watch was fast.

When Harry finally arrived,
He came in all bruised and battered.
He was limping very badly
And his clothes were torn and tattered.

It was exactly nine o’clock
When Harry finally punched in.
The boss stomped from his office door
Demanding just where he had been.

Harry, in pain, said he’d been mugged.
The boss said with bossily glower
“Don’t try to tell me you were mugged.
Mugging doesn’t take an hour!”
